The availability of trained professionals in education, development and allied social sectors in India is grossly inadequate, given the scale, complexity of issues and the wide range of competencies required to work in these areas. Azim Premji University’s key mission is to address this significant talent gap and prepare competent, motivated, socially committed graduates and enable them to engage with social sector.

Azim Premji University has an explicit commitment towards supporting economically disadvantaged students. The University provides extensive scholarships, based on the family income of the students.

Need Based Scholarships
  • Students with an annual family income of less than 7 lakhs are eligible for different levels of scholarships.
  • These scholarships are applicable on both Tuition and Accommodation.

The accommodation expenses - 72,000 per year - mentioned in the above tables are for hostels inside the campus. For hostel accommodation outside, the charges will be 84,000 per year. Allocation of hostels will be decided by the University.

  • Charges for food will be payable at actuals and in exceptional circumstances scholarship will be available for food also.
  • There is no other fee or deposit charged for library, laboratory, IT facilities, examinations, books, etc.
  • Accommodation charges include charges for internet connectivity, other facilities provided at the accommodation.
  • Accommodation and food facilities are provided only during the semester and will not be available during the breaks and vacations.
  • Students are covered under the student insurance scheme at no additional cost.
  • Fee excludes out-of-pocket personal expenses students may incur.

Fees Payment Schedule
  • Semester I Fee: The tuition fees and accommodation fees for the first semester have to be paid in line with the dates mentioned in the admissions offer letter.
  • Other Semesters: The tuition fees and accommodation fees are to be paid within 15 days of the beginning of the Semester in July and January. Actual dates will be communicated by the beginning of the semester.

Additional expenses
  • Some of the additional expenses students are likely to incur are as follows:
Field Activity Expenses
Any weekly practicum which involves travel within Bengaluru (if applicable) Students are expected to bear the expenses releated to travel and food.
First field internship/ immersion /Law & Policy hub (Whichever applicable) The expenses related to food, stay and travel out of Bangalore during the first field internship/ immersion / Law & Policy Hub will be funded by the University for all students (irrespective of scholarship) as per University guidelines
Subsequent internships / field engagements The expenses related to food, stay and travel during the field internships / field engagements will be funded by the University for all students on scholarship, as per University guidelines.
Others Students may incur expenses on stationery and photocopy of reading material. In addition, students will have personal expenses and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Financial assistance assessment process
  • Candidates, interested in availing a scholarship, must fill in details in the application form. Details of income provided must include income from salary, pension, rent, agriculture, business, investments, commission and/or any other sources of earning members of family.
  • The University will conduct financial counselling for scholarship applicants during the interview process, to further understand and assess their needs.
  • Candidates applying for financial assistance should furnish the supporting documents required at the time of interview. Applications from candidates who delay submission / do not provide required supporting documentation will not be considered. Hence, candidates are advised to start collecting the documentation required, as soon as they apply for admissions.
  • Request for financial support after joining the programme will not be considered.

  • Eligibility does not guarantee scholarships. The University will conduct its own verification of documents and due diligence. The University reserves the right to award or deny scholarships and the University's decision on this will be final and non-negotiable.

Tuition Fee Waiver Based On Work Experience
  • All Working Professionals with 3+ years of work experience after graduation are eligible for 50% waiver on Tuition-fee
  • Candidates applying for tuition fee waiver based on work experience should submit the experience certificates.
  • The university conducts verification to validate the information related to work experience.

  • Project Based Assistantships
    • Students will get an opportunity to work on part time projects available in the University
    • Students are expected to work on projects for about 10-12 hours per week.
    • The opportunity is limited to availability of project.
    • Students can earn around Rs. 3000-5000 per month.

    Education Loans
    • The University will facilitate Education loans, through tie ups with banks. Students getting scholarship have the option of availing loans for the balance amount not covered by scholarships.
    • Non-scholarship students also can avail bank loans. These are open to all family income bands.
    • Students can apply for loan to cover tuition and accommodation charges. The actual loan amount to avail can be decided by students, parents / guardians.
    • In the case of students availing education loans, all documentation required by the bank should be provided by the students / parents / guardians. While University will assist the student in the loan process, University does not take responsibility for the sanction / disbursement of the loan. The final decision on the loan rests with the bank.

    The University offers group insurance facility covering life, hospitalization and accident insurance. There is no additional charge for this.

    Azim Premji University aims to create a vibrant community life for all students. The community it aims to build is characterized by respect for others, cooperation, reflection and dialogue. It fosters a caring attitude marked by concern for persons and relationships, both within the University and outside. This spirit is also in alignment with the overall vision of the University of contributing towards a better world.

    The community feeling is realized by several student-led initiatives and events where each and every student is expected to participate with fellow students, learn to take ownership in a shared space and work as a team member.

It is our view that it is in the spirit of dialogue that our community can grow. We have high standards and expectations of dialogue in our community, and we believe dialogue allows for quality of interpersonal relationships as in academic performance.

    Academic Integrity

    Academic discourse relies on the free expression of all ideas and opinions. Inherent to free expression is mutual respect.

    Respect for others includes acknowledging their material, including ideas, images and language, taken from electronic, text, and visual sources. Teachers respect student work when it reflects independent reflection and analysis. Students show respect for others’ work in part by properly identifying the source of ideas, language, and images taken from other sources.

    Of course, respect for oneself and for the work of others forbids any copying of another student’s work and submitting it as one’s own. We encourages students, faculty and staff members to uphold values of integrity and honesty and believes that giving and receiving bribes/gifts in exchange for favours is a corrupt practice.


    Justice and equity are fundamental guiding principles of the University. Any form of discrimination based on religion, caste, gender, sex, community, beliefs, disability or any other factor unrelated to academic requirements is contrary to our principles.

    Sexual Harassment

    We nurture an environment based on respect for individual dignity and space. Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual conduct, unwelcome acts of physical intimacy, unwelcome oral or textual requests for sexual favours, graphic representations of a sexual nature, and other visual, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. We pro-actively build awareness on this issue and offer counselling services with regard to sexual attitudes and behaviour.

    We have a sensitive and strong redressal process for sexual harassment involving abuse of authority and for the sexual harassment of students by other students.

    Bullying, Intimidation and Ragging

    We nurture an environment in which every individual is ensured of her right to live with dignity and respect and is free from vulnerability to any kind of bullying, intimidation or ‘ragging.’ We work proactively towards prevention of such practices and provide a sensitive and strong system of redressal in the event such incidents occur.

    Student Support

    We nurture an inclusive community that makes space for different people, points of view and ideas.

    We know that you may need assistance from time to time. Whether you need help with your physical or emotional health, or if you need to work on your language skills, we are here to help. Here are the resources you need.

    English-language support

    In India, English is not the first language for many students – even for those students who went to English-medium schools. Our English Language Support group will help you strengthen your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. We hold classes every week for 2 to 4 hours in the first semester, in which you work on academic activities to achieve verbal and written competency in English for academic purposes and other communication.


    We make sure that you have spaces to meet your faculty outside the classroom. Over you time at university, you will have a chance to work closely with a member of the faculty on your personal and academic journey. Reach out for support on problems you may face in the classroom or outside.


    We offer counselling services to help you cope with any problems or distress that you may be facing during your time at university. We know that you may need assistance to work through the demands of your coursework, adjusting to a diverse peer group and living in a new space. Our team of qualified counsellors at the Centre for Counselling Services are professionally trained to listen to and understand your concerns. We assure complete confidentiality. We offer personal therapy and group therapy, awareness sessions and skill-building workshops. Appointments can be made during working hours from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Health Services

    Our Medical Centre gives you primary care and referrals at no cost. We offer resources in case of medical emergencies and immediate services for common and minor ailments at our clinic. Our tie-ups with private clinics close by ensures that you have medical care whenever you need, in addition to an ambulance on-call. You are covered under a Health Insurance scheme for in-patient and out-patient expenses and can contact the Student Helpdesk for queries and issues.

    Freshers’ Night (July and August)

    We welcome our new cohort of students with a cultural and fun filled evening! Our 2nd year students organise an evening for you to get to know one another.

    Unmukt (February)

    Our annual cultural festival occupies a special place in the hearts of our university. Unmukt gives you a platform to showcase your special talent and extracurricular interests. Guest lectures, workshops, music, dance, drama, food stalls — the festival has it all!

    Farewell (May)

    Every year,our first year students plan a memorable farewell for the graduating batch of students. An emotional atmosphere filled with lots of energy, dance and music. It’s a great way to send the seniors off to their new lives in style!

    Pahal Club

    Pahal believes that the welfare of an individual depends on the welfare of society as a whole. We aim to make sure that we provide services to society and volunteer to social welfare.

    Our team ensures that those in need acquire the capacities to stand up for their rights in the interest of living a life of dignity. We work to reduce anthropogenic factors adversely affecting the environment by spreading awareness on sustainable development across various spheres.

    Kaapi aur Charcha

    We are an informal platform in which we invite anybody we wish to speak with for a charcha with a cup of coffee. Our idea is to have an open discussion without agenda. We have invited people from all walks of life: Ian Correa, CEO of Hope Foundation; Sharda Ugra, a senior sports journalist; an alumnus Varun Sharma who works with village electrification in Orissa.

    Karvaan — An Annual Student’s Magazine

    Karvaan, since its inception in 2012, has aimed to leave pages blank for voices and thoughts, musings and feelings, struggles and troubles, or maybe, just anything which we create as co-travellers, to be inked. Run by the Editorial Club, this is a student-led initiative in which students showcase their writing — short stories, essays, poetry — art work and photography.

    Our New Campus

    Our new residential campus will soon be opened at Sarjapur-Attibele Road on the outskirts of Bangalore. The campus is reflective of our vision to embody openness and foster a spirit of care, an exemplary learning environment and vibrant campus life

    Spread over 81 acres and with 3 million square feet of space at the first phase of construction, we will accommodate 8000 students and 500 faculty and staff.

    Our new university campus is a learning and living space with hostel accommodation for students, residential facilities for faculty and staff, accommodation for guests, a library, auditorium, amphitheatre, and sports complex with outdoor and indoor games.

    Campus Placement

    Azim Premji University has an explicit social purpose. In line with this, our placement objective is to see all our students engaged with and contribute to the social sector, in a variety of roles.

    • As grass root field practitioners on the ground where their expertise and competence is much needed
    • As contributors to policy making, implementation and evaluation
    • As researchers adding to knowledge in their chosen domains
    Opportunities in the Social Sector

    The social sector today offers a variety of exciting career opportunities for students with a desire to contribute to the development of the country. These opportunities cut across a very diverse range of roles from “on the ground” interventions, program management, policy related work, teaching / capacity building, technology, legal work etc., each of these requiring specific competencies. In addition, social entrepreneurs capable of innovative thinking are needed to ideate, create and implement path-breaking solutions to social problems. All these are well compensated and probably much more challenging and personally satisfying than opportunities in other sectors.

    Placement Record

    Over 1700 students in seven batches have graduated and we have an excellent placement record. Some key points are highlighted below

    • Over 300 organizations have participated in our campus placements so far. These range from large organizations in the NGO space, small organizations at the grassroots, research institutions, policy bodies, CSRs, quasi-government institutions, schools etc. The number of organizations and offers have grown significantly over the last four years, evidencing that the social sector today needs competent people
    • 90 % of our students are working in the social sector, reflective of their social commitment
    • The average salary for campus placements is in the range of Rs. 25000 – 30000 per month. Students with prior experience get higher compensation.
    • Students also choose to pursue higher studies or pursue fellowships of interest to them

    Note: The first batch of M.A. Economics will be graduating in the year 2021.

    Placement Process

    Organizations that participate in the campus placement process are provided with the placement brochure that includes details of students. They are required to give to a pre placement presentation about the organization, roles available and other details. Based on this interested student attend interviews with them.

    Typically, the placement process starts in February and ends in June of each year.

    During this period there are specific placement weeks during which organizations are invited to be on campus. Organizations that may not be able to be on campus during the placement weeks are accommodated on mutually convenient days.

    1. Criminal Justice & Police Accountability Project:
    2. It is an intervention focused on the criminalisation of certain communities by the Police and the criminal justice system and on decarceration. The project is a grassroots litigation-research based intervention based in Bhopal, working in specific locations, and with particular communities across the State of Madhya Pradesh.

      Nikita Sonavane, the co-founder of this project, holds an LL.M in Law and Development degree from Azim Premji University (APU), Bangalore (2016-17) and an LL.B. degree from Government Law College, Mumbai. She has worked as a legal researcher and an advocate for three years. Prior to the project she has worked on issues of Adivasi self-governance and sexual violence.

    3. Spriha Society:
    4. After completion of M.A. Development(2015-17), Ankita Ghosh has set up Spriha Society, accompanied by two other young professionals. The organization is set up in March 2020.

      They work with marginalized community. Specifically with women and children’s health (mental and physical) and their Education. They are planning to set up medical camps in and around Kolkata.

      As the world currently is facing a crisis, the team is distributing food kits to daily wage earners, migrant workers, domestic helpers and also few slums.

    5. Maati Foundation (From Roots to Wings):
    6. The essence of Maati lies in community building as we seek to create a community where experiences are shared, ideas are emerged, individuals are empowered, partnerships are formed, challenges are tackled and solutions are found. Maati aims to re-define education and thereby facilitating the reformation of schools and the education system at large. The idea is to create a platform for the stakeholders to come together in order to initiate a conversation around school transformation.

    7. Step India Foundation:
    8. A world where children with special needs and typically developing children recognize abilities, not disabilities, and learn together in high-quality, inclusive environments.

      Their Mission is to nurture all children with and without special needs in safe, inclusive and supportive environments through education, therapeutic intervention and community acceptance.

    9. North East Educational Trust (NEET):
    10. North East Educational Trust (NEET) is a NGO registered as a public charitable trust in Assam, Guwahati founded by Risha, an alumna of the Azim Premji University (2011-13). NEET works with the vision of creating, “A just, equitable and sustainable society, in which the dignity of labour is respected.” NEET’s mission is “to create educational cultures that nourish autonomous, creative and critical thinkers”. NEET is currently focusing on implementing library programme in government schools to strengthen children’s literature engagement and enhance their critical thinking. It intends to set up a vibrant community library and a community outreach programme that would function through a mobile library in a rural area of the Kamrup District to provide access to children of that particular area to the library experience. Through it, oral folklore and narratives from the community would be documented in the form of short stories.

    11. Library for All (LfA)
    12. The idea of Library for All (LfA) was born in the mind of two ex-students of Azim Premji University who hail from Manipur. The initiative endeavors to provide enriched learning environment to all children by improving existing libraries and setting up new libraries in government elementary schools and thus contributing towards the transformation of the school education system in Manipur. LfA also aims to enrich and supplement conventional curriculum in hilly regions where the variety and quality of teaching-learning resources are inadequate. It will try to ensure that all children have access to quality books and resources appropriate to their age and leaning level for a joyful and quality learning. The initiative further aims to enable all children to read, comprehend and present themselves effectively.

    13. Mitti Café:
    14. MITTI facilitates the creation of cafes in corporate, healthcare and educational institutions to serve organic multi-cuisine fast food and fresh juices. MITTI Cafes are run by a team of persons with disabilities. By employing such persons, we believe that these persons would act as agents of change by example and thereby promote a system of self-sustenance and wellness through our unique livelihood development initiative. These Cafes are unique as they are designed as platforms for the differently-abled communities to showcase their potential for productive activity and to create awareness for the cause of equal opportunities in employment.

      Alina Alam (Founder) is Alumnus of Azim Premji University (Batch of 2017) aim is to provide tasty, nutritious, non-GMO and chemical- free food. Know more

    15. Vidhya Vidhai:
    16. The purpose of Vidhya Vidhai is to bridge the gap between the resourced and under resourced schools. The drive to work for schools comes from our personal experiences with schooling. Coming from a schooling process which just thought us to rote learn and have no link between what we learn and the life we live, we realized the flaw in the education system. Vidhya Vidhai strongly believe that every individual has the right to quality education and therefore we committed ourselves to work for School Transformation Programme. The vision is “To create an egalitarian society through education” where each child has equal opportunity to access quality education

    17. Green saver and welfare:
    18. Started by our 2014 – 16 batch alumni Suhawan Singh (Development) this NGO provides Development consultancy to Members of Parliament. Currently the organization is assisting Chirag Paswan, M.P. of Jamui (Bihar) and designing and implementing development initiatives at adopted village under Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojana. Know more

    19. Ayang:
    20. After the completion of his fellowship with American India Foundation, Dharamjeet (Batch of 2016) returned to work at Majuli, Assam. He and his friends Bipin & Vatan have formed ‘Ayang’, an organisation to engage with the Mishing community of the river island Majuli. Know more

    21. Sanstuti Foundation:
    22. Sanstuti Foundation is established in Uttar Pradesh to support the Village government schools. The foundation support the government schools in Quality support programme. The Program is based on 3 principals i.e. Student Engagement, Teacher Engagement, Community Connect.

    23. Dviti Foundation:
    24. After completion of M.A. Education (2013-15), Amita Nizam worked for over two years as a teacher and a teacher trainer with schools in India and the middle east.

      Her interactions and exposure to primary stakeholders-teachers and students as well as an understanding of classroom as an entity, she identified a problem that she desperately wanted to solve. She identified that while there were talks about the agency of the learner and constructivist pedagogies, at the end of their school life learners still struggle to make their own meaning out of the learning imparted in school and steer ahead in life. Conformity was still harming the basis of educational health.

      The result was Dviti Foundation, formed after a year-long research in the domain of social and emotional learning

    25. SIMPLE : Simple, Ingenious,Mindful, Products for Lifestyle and Environment.
    26. SIMPLE is an initiative towards creating an awareness and a consciousness regarding our consumption patterns and our waste creating lifestyle. Through our products and services we wish to start a conversation about our waste stories and the consequences our civilization and planet is facing due to the current cycle of consumption.

      Our vision is to facilitate people to live a healthy , enriching life which is guided by creative,innovative lifestyle changes that reduces the waste going in our landfills.This initiative is our way to contribute towards building a mindful community that lives to create a simple,healthy and sustainable environment free of waste.

    27. Gubbachi Learning Community:
    28. Gubbachi are the community of learners who have come together to bridge migrant out of school children back into the public education system. A program which endeavours to make learning meaningful for the child and strives to improve the life chances of the child and potentially, his/her family!

Reach India foundation is a non-governmental organization committed towards developing critical perspectives on education among the community of teachers, parents, youths, children and towards encouraging holistic education of all members of society. Reach India extends the discourse on education from quantitative to qualitative perspectives.

      Reach India is a collective of educational and development professionals. The foundation is based in Wayanad district of Kerala, which by virtue of its geographical separation, distinctness and difference in demography, faces numerous challenges including those in the provision of quality education for all.

    31. Credence Learning Foundation (CLF):
    32. The organization is established at Kolar by Qaadir Maaz (Batch of 2016), Karnataka to work on life skills development among school students. Currently, the life skills are targeted through two interventions- Early Childhood Education-ECE and Adolescence Education. Both the projects are on a pilot basis.     33. Rahi Art Crafts:
    34. RCI is a national level platform for handicrafts manufacturers, suppliers and exporters. RCI emerges out with a large collection of beautiful handicrafts made by highly skilled and professional team of artisans. They basically deal in wood craft, metal crafts and other similar kind of products. The aim is to provide a wide array of handicrafts to customer at their door.     35. Knappily:
    36. Knappily is a digital magazine app meant for the “knowledge-hungry time starved people” of today. The app, available for free on Play Store and App Store, comes with an interesting framework – 5W1H (What, Why, When, Where, Who, and How). The app uses this framework to not just uncover information about a topic but also provide complete coverage on it. Ranjith kumar (CTO & Co-Founder) Alumni of Azim Premji University (Batch 2016) has a leaning towards social sector and has engaged with various NGOs for addressing developmental challenges.     37. RUDRA (Rural Urban Development Research and Action):
    38. When Kena Holkar completed her Engineering in Computer Science she opted to do a postgraduation in Development with a deep desire to contribute in the development Sector

      After working for organisations like Srijan she decided to form an organisation of her own and RUDRA was born.

      After the formation of Rudra, they have been working in Dadha Gram Panchayat, Chatra District, Jharkhand. Nature of work under the ambit of Rural Development is with a dream of creating a model village, a society which has achieved holistic development in all spheres of life. A society which is intrinsically linked with the laws of nature and believes in community effort. Their projects spread over all spheres of human lives i.e. Health, sanitation, livelihood, community institution building, women empowerment and Environment.

    39. Travelling Tripod Films:
    40. Travelling Tripod Films is a documentary video and photo production house working with governments, multilateral organizations, research institutes and nonprofits in telling stories of human interest in the social development sector. In the course of time, they have been fortunate to have associated with individuals and organizations from India and abroad in covering some of the most fascinating stories of challenges, positive interventions and best practices in the development landscape.

      Travelling Tripod Films was founded by Goutham G, (M.A. Development 2011- 13), along with a group of film makers and development practitioners.

    42. We- Mana is a social enterprise that is committed to nutrition, especially the nutrition of the socially and economically marginalised. Uma R. Maheswari, alumnus of Azim Premji University, Batch of 14 is the founder of We-Mana.

    43. NEED Charitable Trust:
      Necessity of Education, Equality and Dignity.
    44. Sai Harish Perka after graduating in B.Sc (Biology) from Azim Premji University founded NEED, a non-profitable charity trust.

      The objectives of the organization include activity based and practical based learning and skill shops with experts of respective fields for the parents as they believe that parents ignorance shouldn't limit children dreams.     45. NayiTaleem:
    46. NayiTaleem provides continuous assessment for CBSE Schools to understand the learning gaps amongst students and communicate the to Students and Teachers in real-time. Currently, we are based out of IIM Bangalore as part of the Launchpad program of NSRCEL.

      Nithin Vijayan, an alumnus of Azim Premji University, Batch of 2014-16 is the Founder of NayiTaleem.

    47. BastaR se BazaaR tak
    48. This enterprise is trying to enhance livelihoods of local forest dwellers by reducing post-harvest losses and supplying high quality, unadulterated, processed forest produce to urban consumers at a fair price.
